Ask the NH State Legislature to Support Expanded Background Checks

New Hampshire State Legislators:

I stand with mainstream New Hampshire voters in asking you to support HB 1589, a reasonable bill that would require criminal background checks for all commercially advertised gun sales—including online sales. Background checks save lives, keep guns out of the hands of felons, domestic abusers, and other prohibited persons, and do not conflict with the rights of law-abiding gun owners.

I urge you to make New Hampshire families and communities safer by supporting legislation to require criminal background checks for all commerically advertised firearm sales. This just makes sense: responsible gun owners shouldn't put guns in the hands of people they don't know. This bill does not affect law-abiding New Hampshire gun owners selling and trading guns between friends & family.

Please support HB 1589.

Subject: I support background checks - do you?
    Dear friend --

I'm part of the 89% of Granite Staters who support background checks as a common-sense way to reduce gun violence and save lives. That's why I just signed a petition calling on the New Hampshire state legislature to expand criminal background checks to all commercially advertised firearm sales.

In the absence of action at the federal level, it is important that states explore options to prevent or reduce gun violence in our communities. Under HB 1589, commercially advertised gun sales – including online sales – would require a criminal background check through a federally licensed dealer using the same background check system already used in all dealer sales. It does not affect law-abiding New Hampshire gun owners selling and trading guns between friends & family.

The majority of Granite Staters support commonsense gun safety laws to keep dangerous firearms out of the hands of felons, domestic abusers, and the seriously mentally ill. Please join me in signing this petition and let our state leaders know we want them to consider common-sense solutions for preventing or reducing gun violence in our communities.

    PETITION BACKGROUND

In the absence of action at the federal level, it is important that states explore options to prevent or reduce gun violence in our communities. Under HB 1589, commercially advertised gun sales – including online sales – would require a criminal background check through a federally licensed dealer using the same background check system already used in all dealer sales. This bill does not affect law-abiding New Hampshire gun owners selling and trading guns between friends & family.

New Hampshire ranks among the states with the weakest gun violence prevention laws in the country. But the majority of Granite State residents support commonsense gun safety laws to keep dangerous firearms out of the hands of felons, domestic abusers, and the seriously mentally ill. In fact, polling has consistently shown that 9 in 10 New Hampshire residents support criminal background checks for all firearm sales—including online and private sales.

Please sign the petition and let state leaders know that you support HB 1589 and want the New Hampshire legislature to consider common-sense solutions for preventing or reducing gun violence in our communities.
